Market Harborough

Market Harborough, a charming Leicestershire market town with 800 years of history, offers boutique shopping, excellent cuisine, and rich cultural experiences. Browse Britain’s Best Small Indoor Market for artisan gifts and street food, or visit the quaint Cultural Quarter for the town’s museum, theatre, and iconic stilted Old Grammar School.

Easily accessible from London, Market Harborough is the perfect place to begin your narrowboat adventure. We launch from the picturesque Union Wharf, a basin of the Market Harborough Arm of the Grand Union Canal. Once a bustling industrial quarter, Union Wharf is now a tranquil place to spot waterfowl and enjoy some fine dining at The Waterfront Bar and Restaurant.

Foxton Locks

Not only is Foxton Locks one of the most popular narrowboat destinations in the country, but it’s also one of the most important industrial heritage sites in Europe. It’s home to the longest staircase flight of locks in Britain! It’s the perfect experience for beginners, as volunteer lockkeepers are on hand to guide you through all ten locks.

If you’re interested in its history, explore the Canal Museum and the Inclined Boat Lift. Take a stroll around the 34 acres of beautiful countryside, abundant with swans, herons, and kingfishers. Settle in for a drink and a bite to eat at the Foxton Locks Inn or Bridge 61, or grab a coffee and browse the pre-loved books at the old lockkeeper’s cottage.

Braunston

Braunston is a beautiful Northamptonshire village known as the Heart of England’s Waterways. This junction of the Oxford and Grand Union Canals is a haven of canalside pubs, towpath walks, and narrowboating history.

Spot historic boats in the Braunston Marina or visit the mighty Cathedral of the Canals, famous for all the boaters that have been married or laid to rest here. Stop by the renowned local butchers, grab quality fish and chips at Braunston Fryer, treat yourself to a pub lunch at The Boat House or The Wheatsheaf, or experience the floating café, Gongoozler’s Rest.

Leicester

Leicester is a vibrant cultural hub, famous for its blend of ancient history and modern energy. Moor up beside the quiet greenery of the Castle Gardens or historic Friar’s Mill and set off on foot to explore all that Leicester has to offer. Uncover Leicester’s history at the King Richard III Visitor Centre or the grand Cathedral, or sample the dazzling wares sold on the Golden Mile. Enjoy museums, galleries, a diverse food scene, and one of Britain’s oldest covered markets.

When you’re finished with the bustle of central Leicester, visit Aylestone Meadows, a peaceful oasis and wildlife reserve further south. If you’re lucky, you might spot otters or a herd of rare Longhorn cattle.

Wistow

Wistow is a charming holiday destination and the perfect stop for anyone seeking a peaceful, rural escape. With its scenic walking paths, wildlife-rich landscapes, and friendly community feel, Wistow provides a refreshing break from cruising and a memorable taste of Leicestershire’s countryside at its best.

At its heart is the renowned Wistow Rural Centre. Here you’ll find a bistro serving homemade treats and hearty meals, and you can browse the quaint independent shops selling everything from ceramics to baklava. There’s an impressive garden centre, and, in the summer months, one of England’s largest maize mazes!
